Laser forming research
The process uses the heat of a laser to create form. Material is moved underneath a laser beam by way of a CNC controlled x-y table. Laser forming is largely an empirical research process, which involves investigating the effect of patterns, line order and line direction along with the parameters of heating (to which there are three bending mechanisms). The slideshow shows the set-up, mechanisms and some vessels which started life as tubes; the gallery below features some pieces from sheet that were outcomes of the research. If you are intrigued by the process then you can click to download the paper presented at the 2004 Santa Fe Symposium on Jewelry Manufacturing Technology. |
