Whilst starting in sculpture using sheet metals, in early 1990s I was also model maker for a costume jewellery manufacturer. This led me to consider jewellery as a career.  I did a degree in silversmithing and jewellery at Buckinghamshire College. A connection was made...I hadn't any prior awareness of silversmithing! My work focussed on vessels using fabrication (mostly scoring, shaping and folding), but also included spinning, electroforming and pressing techniques.

After graduating, I worked as a jeweller for an independent retailer. I was however, interested in emergent technology that could develop a commercially sustainable practice with regards to scoring and folding. This led me towards a PhD in 'Laser Forming and Creative Metal work', as a joint project between Buckinghamshire College and The Laser Group at the University of Liverpool.

Upon completion, I set up a large scale CO2 laser facility at Brunel University, applied for funding and led a handful of post-doctoral projects. In 2007, I joined the teaching team on the Product Design programmes. My teaching has been in Design for Manufacture (DFM), Product Analysis and Materials for Design.

For the 2013-14 academic year, I undertook the Bishopsland Educational Trust's programme (which develops silversmiths and jewellers for onward self-employment). The pandemic changed the landscape for many practitioners. Consequently, I have built a garden studio. There, I run classes for two. I have previously taught silversmithing at Bromley Adult Education College. and currently teach Silversmithing and Jewellery at GBMet in Brighton.
